L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science Dean Laura Steinberg, left, converses with Beth O. Cofsky, ’85.

California alumni received an update on the cutting-edge initiatives in technology, innovation, and interdisciplinary research at Syracuse University during a recent trip by SU deans Laura Steinberg of L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science (LCS) and Elizabeth D. Liddy G’77, Ph.D. ’88 of the School of Information Studies (iSchool).

“The trip was a wonderful opportunity to share our excitement with the many new initiatives Liz and I are undertaking in the iSchool and the LCS College of Engineering and Computer Science," said Steinberg. “As a new dean at SU, it was great for me to go to the West Coast and meet some of our most devoted alumni. When I hear the many wonderful ways our alumni are using their SU education, it reminds me how instrumental our alumni and faculty have been in addressing the world’s technology needs. It also inspires me to be sure that our students continue to be prepared for the new, fast-paced, globalized world of engineering. “

The deans hosted events for West Coast alumni in March at the LA84 Foundation in Los Angeles and at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. They presented updates from their respective schools on four key areas: interdisciplinary programs in entrepreneurship and innovation, the JPMorgan Chase Collaboration, cyberinfrastructure, and sustainable built environments and energy.

“It was wonderful to have the opportunity to present jointly with Laura on all the exciting programs and research under way involving both of our schools,” Liddy said. “We don’t often get to connect with our West Coast alumni in face-to-face meetings, so that made the trip all the more worthwhile. We look forward to getting together more frequently with all our West Coast folks in the future, so stay tuned.”
